Metformin for weight loss: honest, modest, and off-label

Metformin is a safe, cheap, well-studied medicine for type 2 diabetes and PCOS, and in diabetes trials it tends to cause slight weight loss rather than weight gain. But in people who do not have diabetes or PCOS, the weight loss from metformin is small and variable, only a few kg over months, and it is not approved as a weight-loss drug. It should not be expected to do what GLP-1 obesity medicines do. Talk to your doctor before using it for weight.

Metformin is one of the most common and cheapest medicines in India. Doctors give it for type 2 diabetes and for PCOS, and many people take it for years safely. Because some people on metformin lose a little weight, a common hope grows: maybe this cheap tablet can help me lose weight too, even without diabetes. This guide gives you the honest picture. The short version is that metformin can cause a small, variable weight loss in people without diabetes, but it is not a primary weight-loss medicine, it is not approved for obesity, and it should not be expected to match what the newer GLP-1 obesity drugs do. Taking metformin just for weight loss, when you do not have diabetes or PCOS, is off-label, meaning outside the approved use. Please talk to your doctor before any decision.
