Why GLP-1 medicines are not standard treatment for type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is a different disease from type 2. In type 1, the immune system destroys the beta cells that make insulin, so the body makes little or no insulin. GLP-1 medicines like Ozempic and Mounjaro work partly by telling the body to release insulin when blood sugar rises. When the beta cells are gone, that benefit is limited. These medicines are not approved for type 1 diabetes and are not a replacement for insulin. Some small studies looked at GLP-1 as an add-on to insulin in type 1, with modest sugar, weight and insulin-dose benefits, but they also saw more low sugars and ketosis risk. Insulin remains the foundation of type 1 care. This is a plain explainer, not medical advice; your diabetologist decides.

If you or someone you love has type 1 diabetes, you take insulin every day to stay alive. So when you hear about GLP-1 injections like Ozempic or Mounjaro doing great things for weight and blood sugar, a fair question comes up: could one of these help with type 1 too? The honest answer is no, not as a standard treatment. GLP-1 medicines are approved for type 2 diabetes, not type 1, and they are not a replacement for insulin. Some research has tested them as an add-on to insulin in type 1, with modest benefits on weight and insulin dose, but also more low sugars and ketosis worries, so they are not first-line. This article is not medical advice. It is a plain, careful explainer so you can ask your diabetologist the right questions. The hard line: in type 1 diabetes, insulin is the foundation, and no GLP-1 replaces it.
