GLP-1 medicines and your thyroid: the C-cell warning

First, the warning is built on rat and mouse studies, where these drugs caused a type of thyroid growth called C-cell tumors. Second, the labels say plainly that it is unknown whether the same thing happens in humans. Third, the drugs are firmly contraindicated if you have, or have a family history of, medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or a rare inherited condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Fourth, there is a separate, very practical issue that often gets missed: GLP-1 medicines slow down your stomach emptying, and that can change how well your body absorbs levothyroxine, the thyroid hormone pill.
